Eye Strain Solution for Animators
I spend at least 10 hours a day in front of a screen. Whether it’s my PC at work, at home, my tablet or my phone, my life depends on screens. That has become normal for most people nowadays. The problem is that all electronic devices emit blue light, which we shouldn’t be exposed to too much, and especially not during the night. Blue light is not harmful in itself, and it’s actually very beneficial. Sun emits blue light and it’s important for our bodily rhythm to function properly, but if we are exposed to it during the night it tells our body that it’s still day time. One way of limiting the effect of display glare is using blue light blocking glasses.
Limit Exposure to Blue Light at Night
Many studies have shown that blue light after dark disrupts circadian rhythm and suppresses melatonin production, and that constant exposure to artificial light can have even more harmful consequences. Some researchers say that shift workers or people who are regularly up late at night have a higher risk of various cancers, obesity and chronic diseases. There is also evidence that links the disruption of the circadian cycle to higher rates of heart disease, cardio vascular diseases and high blood pressure. The best way to deal with this problem would be not to stare at anything that emits artificial light at least three hours before going to bed in order to get your body used that it’s night time, and that it should prepare for the night “mode”.
Blue Light Blocking Glasses
Getting rid of electronic devices after dark or in bed is not possible, at least not for me. In fact, I do most of my work at night and there is no way for me to ever change that. The other thing is that I get so concentrated while animating that I sometimes forget to blink for a few minutes. When you combine that with the fact that I usually work for more than 8 hours a day the conclusion is that I should go blind in a few years. One thing I found helpful while trying to find a solution is using blue light blocking glasses while working. My eyes don’t get tired that much anymore so I get more done, I sleep better and feel more rested in general. What they do is basically diminish the harmful influence of artificial blue light. Not completely, of course, but a large part of it definitely. A study made on 20 adults who wore blue light blocking glasses for three hours before sleep has shown that both their sleep quality and their mood has significantly improved. So even if you can’t completely eliminate using devices that emit artificial light at night, you can suppress their negative effect on your body using blue light blocking glasses.
Choosing a Brand
When it comes to choosing which glasses to buy, I went for Gamma Ray. They are really affordable (I paid $18 for mine), much cheaper than some other brands, and they get the job done perfectly. Before deciding I read quite a few reviews and watched a few videos that compared them to other brands, and I’ve concluded that there was no reason to spend more money on a better known brand because I wouldn’t get more for the higher price.
