10 (Unconventional) Christmas Gifts Every Animator, Illustrator and Artist Would Love

I know it can be hard to get great gift ideas year after year, but I’m sick of getting boring gifts from my friends and family based only on the fact that I’m an animator. I keep getting notebooks, coloring pencils, software manuals and all sorts of useful but boring stuff. Why do people assume that you don’t buy these things yourself already? This year I’ve assembled the ultimate Christmas present wishlist. It was made for animators, illustrators, designers, anime fans, comic fans, collectors, programmers, gamers, trekkies, geeks, and all other people who have been getting boring stuff year after year. Maybe it will help you get ideas for someone’s present this year or you might find something you want yourself too. I’ve made sure that there is something for everyone’s budget. Feel free to suggest more fun and useful gifts in the comments section below. For more info about each item, customer reviews and prices, click on the item title or image.

1. Star Wars BB-8 Droid

Whether you are a Star Wars fan or not, you have to admit that it would be cool to own a droid you can give orders to. You can control it from your tablet or smartphone from within a 100ft range. Based on your interactions, BB-8 will show a range of expressions and even perk up when you give voice commands. Click here for reviews and prices.

2. Wacom Cintiq 22HD

This is one of the more conventional gift ideas I’ve decided to include and I did it because the Cintiq is probably every animator’s dream. I’ve had a chance to buy it at half price when a studio I was working for was having an “after project sale”. After you get used to it there is no more going back. Maybe you have someone who’s rich and loves your very much who can buy it for you. Click  here for reviews and prices.

3. Amazon Tap

This surreal device uses the Alexa Voice Service when connected to Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot to play music, read the news, provide weather reports, order a pizza or do something else you put your mind on. I’m an idiot when it comes to electronics, so this amazing speaker seems like sci-fi to me. Definitely a great gift choice for anyone (and especially for animators who sit in front of a screen and don’t feel like getting up). Click here for reviews and prices.

4. UDI RC Quadcopter Drone with HD Camera

Imagine taking your drone everywhere you go and taking amazing pictures or videos from the sky. I doubt there is anyone in the world who wouldn’t love getting this for Christmas. It might be hard to choose which drone to buy because they range from $40 to $40.000, but this is one of the best models when it comes to price/quality ratio. 5. Fujifilm Instax Mini 8

An amazing polaroid instant camera. It makes a really great gift because nobody develops photos anymore. Everything is left online forever, and with Instax you can get printed photos in 10 seconds which is really fun. Click here for more info, reviews and prices.

6. Cooluli Mini Fridge; Portable Electric Cooler and Warmer

If you are behind a computer all day as I am (and if you are an animator you probably are) you probably forget to drink or eat quite often. I usually have something if someone brings it to me, and otherwise tend to completely forget about it. This is an amazing thing because you can keep stuff at hand (it’s only 10x8x11 inch) while you work. I think every animator should own it. Find out more here.

This amazing pocket-size gadget delivers fastest possible charge speed at up to 2 amps (which is four times faster than a computer USB port). You can’t go wrong with this one because everyone either needs it themselves or knows someone else that does. It’s also really affordable which makes it a perfect gift.
